Rice

Rice is without a doubt the most consumed cereal worldwide. Most people don't have the slightest idea of the technology used to process rice, it is to say from the moment it is harvested to the moment we consume it. Rice is a commodity traded worldwide. There are countries like China that have stock for a year. Can you imagine what would happen if China ran out of rice? How would China feed their population? It is better not to think about it.

Here in Spain, there is an important tradition of Paellas. The variety of rice consumed in Spain is mostly round rice or also known as short rice, while in Latin America long grain rules. In Spain, we like to consume kinds of rice with higher content of starch for our traditional varieties of dishes we prepare nationwide. But at the end of the day, we do know rice is consumed worldwide more than any other cereal. And a growing trend is going to continue because it is indeed the cheapest cereal. So having said that, it is important to point out that rice husk was considered a waste, and not the type of waste easy to dispose of. Rice husk represent 20% of the total weight of a grain of rice. The rice industry is using such rice husk to dry the grain in the process. A great number of companies have discovered that what was waste in the past has turned into a very profitable sub-product. Super Brix, a Colombian company based in Barranquilla, has been manufacturing biomass furnaces for the last 45 years, therefore, contributing to make our world a better place to live.

Super Brix is truly making a difference in the way rice husk is treated. The ashes produce in the process are rich in silica; therefore, such ashes are very valuable for the glass industry. While attending a rice milling workshop in Argentina I heard something I still treasure "The challenge for the industry is what to do with the waste and sub-products derived from the process". And I must say I totally agree with such a remark; our company is helping the industry as well as farmers to deeply understand rice processing and its intricacies. We develop turnkey projects globally, and although our core business is rice the company is very active in corn, barley, wheat, soy, and oats just to name a few. There are other companies with a much larger invoicing, but our commitment, enthusiasm, passion, and thrive for innovation have no match.
