Things can always get a lot worse.
You might have heard that sort of cliche over and over again, at least I have. I was born in Venezuela, and I had a great childhood, for it was a completely different country. However, things have changed a great deal to the extent that I wouldn’t even go back even to collect an inheritance, and the worst thing is that I still have relatives and friends that for some reason or another decided to stay. I can only feel sorry for them. I am angry at the way the United States has allowed that regime to become a failed state.
If you think about it, Venezuela has always been the nearest and most abundant oil supply for the US, and yet they just look the other way not to get involved. As long as Americans have enough money to spend with their credit cards, everything is honky fucking dory. Every drug cartel, terrorist group, and corrupted individual is protected by the government and the world does not give a flying fuck.
Many years ago, as I was getting ready to get the fuck out of that sorry ass country, a group of friends asked me about my perception of the future. I didn’t want to make a statement because I am not the kind of citizen who deserves to have a Venezuelan passport, but they insisted. We were having some drinks and it was rather late. I must have been a bit under the influence. So, after thinking for a while, I came up with the following vivid description. I envisioned a humongous ball of shit rolling over and literally swallowing everything around. Guess what! I made a mistake because my prediction was incorrect. The size of that chunk of shit was smaller than what it actually is.
When the Liberia war erupted, I was living in Madrid and had a friend from Liberia whose name was Fumba Dukulet. He was a black good looking fellow whose family were diplomats. He got news that his entire family had been killed by the rebels, so he decided to go back and find out what had become of his family. He traveled with an expedition of the Red Cross into Liberia, but they didn't get very far because the war was in its most cruel moments. I do remember watching some poor quality pictures he took with his cell phone. The pictures were horrifying, for there were so many corpses in advanced decomposition stage. There was a particular picture that truly called my attention. According to my friend’s testimony, there was a group of fat vultures on a wood fence, and in front of them a bunch of recently executed individuals. He was convinced the vultures were full and could not feast anymore.
Venezuela is on the brink of total collapse and the images were are going to see from now on are going to resemble the war between Hutus and Tutsis. But then again nobody cares; it is business as usual.
For instance, Colombia has lived a period of unprecedented peace, and it makes sense because all the drug dealers and terrorists have been living in Venezuela protected by the local military. The drug route that originates in Bolivia in Peru counts on Venezuela as a middle destination before it ends up in the hands of the Mexican cartels that are ultimately responsible for smuggling the drugs into the United States. It is without a doubt a multi-billion dollar operation and the drug cartels are simply doing what they do best.
In order to understand what’s at stake, one must watch this brief series to visualise the whole picture. A lot of people thought that American soldiers would march in Venezuela as they have done in the past, but that is not going to happen. I hate to be a party-pooper but that country has another thing coming. In one of his most important performances, George Carlin talks about what would happen in the United States if electricity disappeared completely. The chaos and anarchy that immediately follow were magnificently described, but without knowing he was actually making reference to Venezuela.

Venezuela is just a sad story of corrupted governments and people whose only intention has always been to make the most out of the opportunity. As a matter of fact, instead of solidarity in obscure times, we come across individuals who profit in the most hideous ways. When the blackouts took place, there were people charging unheard amounts of money to recharge cell phones. Some people were selling ice for 10€ per bag. It is precisely this kind of behaviour as well as a deeply rooted devotion to witchcraft what generates dark, negative energy in no man’s land. And allow me to top it all with incest, which has become such a common practice that everybody thinks that is okay.
So to conclude, I want you to think about some of the things I mentioned next time you say to yourself: what have we done to deserve this? I do know better than anyone else that I am going to be hated for some of the remarks I made, but the fact is that I stopped caring a long time ago. And for those of you who still have a chance to leave I can only say this: Get the fuck out and don’t look back.
